In an early matinee game in New York today, the Chicago Sky downed the Liberty 75-55. Elena Delle-Donne led all scorers with 23 points. She added 6 rebounds and 4 blocks. Second year post Carolyn Swords, who started in place of the injured Sylvia Fowles, scored a season-high 12 points and had 5 steals in 31 minutes of play. The Sky was so impressed and thankful for her efforts in the game that they gave Swords the game ball.
"[Carolyn] did a good job," said Sky head coach Pokey Chatman. "She had five steals. Here's [someone] 6-foot-6 who doesn't have quick feet, but has a quick mind."
For New York, Plenette Pierson and Kelsey Bone had 11 points. Bone added a game-high 8 rebounds as well.
The Liberty have lost five of their last six games. They weren't able to overcome an early 13-0 lead by Chicago. At one point in the fourth quarter, the Sky led the Liberty by 29 points, the largest lead of the game. By that point, it was evident that the Sky were going to take the game.
The win dubs Chicago the sole leader in the Eastern Conference with an 11-4 record. All eyes are focused on the finals, not the playoffs. Veterans like Swin Cash have convinced the team that making it to the playoffs is an expectation. And of course it is obvious on what the ultimate goal is for the Sky.
Both Chicago and New York get a two day rest and then will have a rematch of this morning's game in Chicago. The game will take place Sunday, July 20th at 8pm ET. You can catch the game on WNBA Live Access.
