The Indiana Fever outscored the Washington Mystics 22-8 in the fourth quarter en route to a 77-70 win.
The game was close, each quarter only being won by a few points. Indiana's defense forced 21 Mystics turnovers while they themselves only turned the ball over 13 times.
Indiana was up 32-31 at halftime, but Washington came out of the locker room and went on an 10-0 run. It just wasn't enough as the Mystics lost steam in the fourth and could only get eight points on the board.
"It was a shame to give up a good third quarter," said first year Mystics coach Mike Thibault. "The difference was in turnovers and rebounds."
Shavonte Zellous led Indiana with 16 points. She limped to the bench with 1:28 left in the third quarter after getting kneed in the thigh. But she would return and give the Fever the spark they needed to steal the game. Briann January added 12 points while post Erlana Larkins chipped in with 10 points and 9 rebounds.
Ivory Latta led the Mystics with 16 points, tying the game-high with Zellous. Both Matee Ajavon and Kia Vaugh added 10 points. Vaugh was 4-7 from the field.
These two teams have a rematch on Sunday, July 21st at 4pm ET at the Verizon Center. The game can be seen on WNBA Live Access.
