With a lay-up halfway through the fourth quarter, Los Angelos forward Candace Parker broke the record for the most points in the WNBA All-Star game, previously held by Swin Cash. Parker scored 23 points, toppling the record by just one point. She finished the night with 11 rebounds as well.
It was Parker's first All-Star appearance. When asked about her performance, she said that she was just trying to make sure her former teammate Tina Thompson got a win in her final All-Star game. Thompson, the 38-year old veteran, announced her retirement at the beginning of the season. She was added to the All-Star roster after Brittney Griner wasn't able to play in the game.
Parker's teammate Kristi Toliver ended the game with 21 points, scoring 19 in the second. It was her first All-Star game as well.
Parker received MVP honors for the game.
The second half of the WNBA season starts on Wednesday, July 31st when the New York Liberty visit the Washington Mystics.
